A good jacket is an investment — in comfort, performance, and style. To make it last for years, it needs the right care. Unfortunately, many conventional cleaning and waterproofing products contain chemicals that can harm the environment once they’re washed down the drain. The good news is that there are now sustainable alternatives that protect both your jacket and the planet. Here’s how to care for your jacket in an eco-friendly way.

Wash Smart — and Less Often

The first step toward sustainable jacket care is to wash less frequently and more thoughtfully. Every wash uses water, energy, and detergent, and it also wears down the fabric. Often, simply airing out your jacket or wiping it with a damp cloth is enough to freshen it up.

When you do wash, choose a mild, biodegradable detergent that’s free from fragrances, optical brighteners, and phosphates. Look for products certified by trusted eco-labels such as EPA Safer Choice or Green Seal. Avoid fabric softeners, which can damage technical coatings and reduce water repellency.

Wash on a gentle cycle with cold water to save energy and preserve the fabric’s integrity. Always follow the care label instructions for best results.

Refresh the Water Repellency — Without Harmful Chemicals

Many outdoor jackets have a durable water-repellent (DWR) coating that helps water bead off the surface. Over time, this coating wears away, but you can easily restore it. In the past, many waterproofing sprays and washes contained fluorinated chemicals (PFAS), which are persistent pollutants. Today, there are PFC-free alternatives that work just as well.

Choose products labeled fluorocarbon-free or PFC-free, and make sure they’re designed for your jacket type — whether it’s down, softshell, or a waterproof shell. Apply the treatment after washing, following the instructions carefully. Some products require heat activation, so a short tumble dry on low (if your jacket allows it) can help.

Repair Instead of Replace

A small tear or a broken zipper doesn’t mean your jacket’s life is over. Quick repairs can significantly extend its lifespan. Many outdoor retailers and brands in the U.S. — such as Patagonia’s Worn Wear program or REI’s Repair Services — offer professional repairs for technical clothing. You can also find DIY repair kits with patches and adhesives for at-home fixes.

If a zipper sticks or a button falls off, a local tailor can often repair it for a fraction of the cost of a new jacket. Choosing to repair instead of replace is one of the most effective ways to reduce your environmental footprint.

Dry and Store Properly

After washing or wearing your jacket in the rain, make sure it dries completely. Hang it on a sturdy hanger in a well-ventilated area — avoid direct sunlight or high heat, which can damage the fabric. Once dry, store it hanging to maintain its shape and prevent wrinkles.

If you’re putting your jacket away for the season, ensure it’s clean and dry before storing it in a closet or breathable garment bag. This prevents mildew and odors, keeping it fresh and ready for next season.

Think Circular — Give Your Jacket a Second Life

Even the best jacket won’t last forever, but you can still make a difference when it reaches the end of its life. Many brands and organizations in the U.S. now offer textile recycling or take-back programs that turn old garments into new materials. You can also donate gently used jackets to local shelters or community organizations, or swap them with friends.

By thinking circularly and choosing products designed to last, you help build a more sustainable clothing culture — one jacket at a time.

Small Choices, Big Impact

Eco-friendly jacket care isn’t about perfection; it’s about making conscious choices. Every time you pick an eco-certified detergent, repair instead of replace, or avoid PFAS-based waterproofing, you’re protecting both your jacket and the environment.

With a little care and awareness, you can extend the life of your favorite outerwear while reducing your environmental impact. It’s a win for your wardrobe — and for the planet.
